Ride for Ceylon 2019
We opted for a cycle ride as a visible and practical means to raise awareness, funds and momentum for the hospital; symbolically, it represents so much more. Riding across the scars of this troubled land, from its southern capital city to its war-devastated north, the ride signifies a coast-to-coast process of healing, unity and hope for broken communities and their descendents.
The inaugural ride took place in February 2017, comprising 6 riders, followed by the February 2018 ride of 25 riders, comprising Old Boys with international friends. Together, 2017 and 2018 rides raised some £70, 000 for the hospital, resulting in direct benefits:
· The 2017 ride supported neuro rehabilitation services and the renovation of nurses’ living quarters.
· In 2018, donations included support for drug rehabilitation and £10, 000 of cash and goods towards the construction of a new Gabriella Rasiah Paediatric and Cardiology ward, in memory of rider David Rasiah’s daughter, who died tragically at aged 17 in July 2017.
The fruit of the 2017 and 2018 Rides for Manipay have enabled work to commence on the redevelopment of the main hospital and the creation of the new Paediatric and Cardiology Ward.
With work now underway, 2019 presents a new phase for our story, and so the right time to refocus and relaunch as Ride4Ceylon. The 2019 ride will take place from 27 February to 2 March 2019, and is expected to involve some 30 riders. Donations will be focused on the Paediatric and Cardiology Ward, a digital upgrade of the x-ray machinery, the general maintenance and upkeep of the hospital.
Led by a Committee of Nishan Wickramaratna, Michael Arnold, Sriomal De Silva and David Rasiah, and supported by trustees Dr. Jayantha Arnold and Anandan Arnold, the team will run annual cycle rides from late February to early March and are always keen to hear from supporters, volunteers and riders.
We’d welcome your support, whatever your interest or contribution and wherever you are. If you’d like to be involved either as a rider, donator or campaigner – or simply to find out more – do get in touch at: ride4ceylon@gmail.com.
Why not come along for the ride and help to return Sri Lanka to paradise…
